3 Supplements that Sabotage Fat Loss After 40

If you are over 40 and trying to lose weight, the problem may not be your effort. It may be your strategy.


I see women spending hundreds of dollars on “fat burners,” energy boosters, and metabolism hacks. Most do not work and some actually make fat loss harder.


After 40, your metabolism becomes hormone driven. Estrogen shifts. Cortisol rises more easily. Sleep becomes more fragile. Muscle mass declines faster.


Anything that disrupts sleep, spikes blood sugar, or elevates stress hormones will slow fat loss.

If I wanted to lose fat after 40, I would avoid these three immediately.



  1. High Dose Caffeine

Moderate caffeine can support metabolism. A 2022 review in the International Journal of Sports Nutrition and Exercise Metabolism showed caffeine increases metabolic rate and suppresses appetite.

But more is not better. Once intake exceeds about 300 mg per day, sleep quality drops.


A 2025 study in Sleep found 400 mg of caffeine reduced deep sleep and increased nighttime awakenings, even when consumed 12 hours before bed.


Sleep regulates:

• Insulin sensitivity

• Cravings

• Cortisol

• Fat storage


You cannot burn fat efficiently if you are not sleeping deeply. If you rely on multiple coffees, pre workouts, or stimulant based “fat burners,” you are pushing cortisol higher and slowing metabolic repair.


  1. Honey as a Daily “Health” Supplement

Raw honey is marketed as immune supporting and antioxidant rich, it's still sugar. One tablespoon contains roughly 17 grams of sugar. That spikes blood sugar quickly. Blood sugar spikes increase insulin. Insulin blocks fat burning.


When blood sugar crashes, cravings rise and energy drops. Cortisol increases. Fat loss stalls. If you want antioxidants, eat whole fruit like:

• Blueberries

• Raspberries

• Blackberries


They provide fiber, which stabilizes blood sugar and supports fat loss. Honey is an occasional treat, not a daily supplement.



  1. Garcinia Cambogia

This supplement resurfaces every few years as a “natural fat burner.” Multiple systematic reviews show no meaningful impact on weight loss. A 2018 review in Internal and Emergency Medicine found Garcinia was linked to liver damage in several users.


It did not improve fat loss. It harmed metabolic health. Fat loss does not come from stimulants or miracle pills. It comes from restoring metabolic flexibility.



What Actually Works After 40

After 40, fat loss is not about cutting calories harder. It is about retraining your metabolism to burn fat efficiently again.


That requires:

• Stabilizing blood sugar

• Improving sleep quality

• Lowering chronic cortisol

• Preserving and building muscle

• Supporting hormonal transitions


Fat loss after 40 is about retraining your metabolism, not stimulating it.
